The government have prevented landlords from evicting commercial tenants for non-payment of rent in almost all situations during the pandemic, with the latest Moratorium period due to expire on June 30th. Most people were not expecting it to be extended much further – if at all – and it has therefore come as a surprise that the government have in fact extended the period until the end of March next year – i.e. for a further nine months.
This is obviously very good news for commercial tenants but landlords are going to be very unhappy, particularly given that there are many well financed tenants out there who are refusing to pay their rent because of these rules.
