Having been a probate solicitor for over 27 years, and dealt with numerous estates where I have had to carefully sort through someone’s home to extract the necessary paperwork, it is not uncommon to find cash (and other treasures!) hidden around the home. Whilst we all might have heard of people keeping money under the bed, or even down the back of the sofa, more unusual places have been at the back of the fire (yes, really), inside cereal packets, the bottom of the laundry basket, or behind the rise of each stair carpet tread…
One problem we come across when finding cash (aside from proceeds of crime and anti-money laundering issues…) is that it can sometimes be old notes and hard to exchange. The current UK paper £20 and £50 notes are shortly due to be withdrawn from circulation – the last day they can be used being 30 September 2022. After that date, people will need to either exchange them at their own banks, the Post Office or directly with the Bank of England, www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/exchanging-old-banknotes.
